In scene 5, we learn Danny, Rita’s husband, finds out she is lying to him about taking the pill. As a consequence, Danny over reacts and burns her books and essays. However, Rita is more determined than ever not to abandon the course she’s taking with Frank.
If we try to understand why the course means so much for Rita, we are to pay attention to what she says to her tutor about it. She definitely believes the course is “proving her with life, more life than she’s had in years.” She feels alive as she is discovering herself and is not willing to give in just because her husband can’t understand why she is doing it.
On the other hand, Danny sees the whole thing in a different light, so I wonder if any of them both can be blamed for the hard time the couple is going through.
Life is about making decisions all the time, and, unfortunately, we can’t satisfy everyone with our choices. The hard question is: Shall we sacrifice ourselves to please others?

Tough question, Miriam! Don't expect me to give you the answer! :-P
The only thing I can suggest here is a remark my therapist made once. She explained to me that when we see situations as if we were trapped in a room with just two doors to get out("walk out on her husband" or "sacrifice all her dreams", in Rita's case), we're confronted with two bad options, neither of which will lead us to a satisfactory solution, and probably missing a third (and perhaps even a fourth) door that might open up to a much better decision...
You know what, I've been trying to look for "third doors" since then, and I think her advice was wise!
Let's see what Rita does!

Gladys
It´s good to have an optimistic view of life. If I ever had to choose among two difficult things as Rita does, I would follow your advice!

Miriam
That's a deal, then, but remember it wasn¡t my idea in the first place! :-P
Anyway, can you think of "third doors" Rita might try at this stage?
Way to go!
Gladys
A Possible option would be missing some classes while she tries to make her husband see through her and viceversa. Perhaps, she could suggest spending more time together to talk about how they feel about the other and see if they can sort the problem out.
Would that be wise? Only Rita and Dany know...
